'Real Steal' doesn't aspire to such tragic heights: here, the robots are merely controlled by their human handlers at ringside with WiFi-like control boxes.
What 'Real Steel' does have is a solid plot. The New York Times may be correct in assessing that it is a "well wrought out entertainment. On the other hand, it's basically geared toward the pre-adolescent market with a very predictable storyline.
My problem with the film are with its principal characters. Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, the former boxer turned robot trainer/manager who is pretty much a caricature of a dumb, impulsive, child-like man who's solely driven by material concerns. This is a role that probably would have been better played by a young Mel Gibson in his heyday. Here, Jackman tries hard but fails to make an unlikeable character, likable.
Kenyon is unsympathetic from the get-go- welshing on a bet with the sleazy promoter, Ricky, and then skipping town. The dark moment of Real Steel's second act, when Ricky and his goons beat up Kenyon for failing to pay up on the bet, is indicative of why we're unable to root for Kenyon, even after two thirds of the story is complete. Even Kenyon can hardly protest, as the beat down appears not to be completely unjustified.
And then there's little Max (Dakota Goyo) who Charlie accepts 100,000 for from the boy's wealthy aunt and uncle, in exchange for full parental custody. The precocious Max, for my tastes, appears to be a little too aggressive and confident for a preteen, and the sight of a father and son, interacting on just about the same level of maturity, comes off as more comical than realistic.
The strength of 'Real Steel' lies in the escalating tension of the fight scenes. The robots themselves (most of them anyway) seem to be modeled on 'Transformers' but Atom, Max's 'bot' rescued from a junkyard, is more a cross between the steely intelligence of a humanoid Robocop and cuddly Spielberg extraterrestrial.
Perhaps the best of the fight scenes occur early on. In the opening scene, Kenyon's obsolete robot, Ambush' lives up to his name, when he's slaughtered by a real-life bull at a rural fair. Using the money he obtains from giving up custody of Max, Charlie purchases 'Noisy Boy' a secondhand 'World Robot Boxing League' WRB) Japanese model, who also ends up as a pile of junk, while being roundly destroyed by Midas, the illegal circuit champion.
After the discovery of the discarded 'Atom' an obsolete 'second generation' sparring bot, Max and Charlie try their luck in an unsanctioned outdoor meet, featuring a crowd of unsavory boxing enthusiasts who look like extras from a Mad Max movie. The spiked hair trainer with a robot called 'Metro' steals the show, as he attempts to take down Atom with great panache, but ultimately ends up having his own robot destroyed in the process.
A montage follows with the media soon promoting Atom as the people's champion. With his growing fame, Max and Charlie obtain a legally WRB sanctioned fight with 'Twin Cities' a double headed robot, who Atom easily knocks out. This gives Max the opportunity to get up in the ring and challenge Farra Lemkkova and Tak Moshido, the Russian mogul owner and Japanese computer genius trainer, of the intimidating world champion, Zeus.
SUPER SPOILERS AHEAD: To the writer's credit, the underdog Atom, does not defeat the physically superior Zeus. True to form, the world champion retains his title, winning on points. Still, Max and Charlie can take comfort that Atom is now the 'people's champion' and he was able to stand toe to toe with the champ.
In the end, Real Steel' proves to be a real mixed bag. You have a great deal of variety in the various fight venues and a clever mix of actors in giant robot suits doing their thing, coupled with some excellent Avatar-like effects. But the overwhelmingly predictable tale of loser father redeemed along with an in-your-face, overenthusiastic pre-teen boxing enthusiast peddling his win-at-any-cost unwholesome wares, tends to turn this somewhat compelling narrative into a less than successful 'B' picture as opposed to a high-level, sci-fi fantasy entertainment.
